CHAPTER EIGHT

TWO DAYS LATER and she hadn’t set eyes on him.

Cora was the ultimate professional. In the NICU she was all smiles. She’d written a few more protocols for the procedure and asked Alice for advice on how to put them through all the relevant committees.

Alice had waved her hand. ‘Jonas will do all that for you,’ she’d said casually.

‘I like to see things through myself,’ she’d insisted. ‘Plus, I like to find out all the procedures anywhere that I’m working. Each hospital works differently, and it’s good for me to get a handle on different operating procedures.’

If Alice had been suspicious, she hadn’t said so, just scribbled down some names and numbers of people for Cora to get in touch with.

Forty minutes later when there had been a page from the antenatal ward that another of their patients had gone into early labour, she’d decided to go on down.

Her phone buzzed as she ran down the stairs. It was Chloe. They’d been ping-ponging messages to each other after Cora had raged about Jonas a few days ago.

Just thinking. Can’t remember the last time you ranted about someone quite so much. If you ask me, there’s more to this than a disagreement about work. Exactly how attractive is Jonas Nilsson?

Cora’s mouth bounced open. Chloe was too smart for her own good.

Viking-like. But far too arrogant for me to care how attractive he is.

Dots appeared. Chloe was immediately typing a response.

You’ve kissed him, haven’t you?

Cora actually stopped mid-step.

Why on earth would you say that??????????

She was shaking her head as Chloe typed back.

Knew it.

She let out a sigh and put her phone back in her pocket. Chloe could always read her like a book.

As she reached the labour suite, there was that eerie kind of calm. There was no sign of any staff, and the corridor was silent—never a good sign in a labour ward.

She made her way along the corridor, towards the emergency theatre at the end. Just as she reached the swing doors, a midwife burst through them, wearing a blood-stained plastic apron. She gave Cora a quick glance up and down before a flicker of recognition crossed her face and she pointed a gloved hand. ‘NICU doctor?’

Cora nodded without speaking.

‘Good, with me. Emergency.’ The midwife gave a sharp nod of her head and pushed open the doors.

Cora could tell immediately that this was where the majority of the staff were. Someone was lying on the floor, and it took her a few moments to realise it was a fellow doctor, who was pregnant. She went immediately to assist, but a voice from the theatre table stopped her.

‘No, leave her. We need you here.’

Cora’s head flicked from one place to the other. Every instinct in her wanted to help her fellow colleague on the theatre floor, but there were three members of staff already around her. One of them caught her eye. ‘She’s diabetic. Had a hypoglycaemic attack. We can deal with this.’

Cora didn’t recognise the obstetrician in the cap
